About Our Congregation

“You are invited to bring all that you are: your beliefs and traditions, race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, and the wisdom of your years to this church. You are welcome here! In this church, may you always seek your truth, speak your truth in love, and live your truth through service. And through all your days and nights, may you experience love.”

This statement is part of our worship services.

Diversity

First Parish welcomes diversity. While the community, like Maine, is not statistically diverse, the congregation works towards understanding and acceptance among people of different races and persuasions. The church has sponsored speakers, workshops, and conversations about racial injustice, LGBTQ+ issues, poverty, and immigration. Many volunteer to donate food and help at local food kitchens.

Caring Connections

We have an active caring team that keeps tabs on those in need within our community. A death in the family, a hospital stay, or some other medical problem will bring on letters and phone calls along with plenty of home cooked meals. Many in the congregation feel this is something we do well and have benefited from or contributed to our efforts to care for each other. A brochure with specifics is available; please contact the minister or church office.

LGBTQ+

First Parish completed a two-year educational program to help us become more open, affirming, and inclusive towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+, and Questioning people. In 2007 the congregation voted unanimously to become a Welcoming Congregation, and The Unitarian Universalist Association recognized this accomplishment.

Our Extended Community

Kennebunk is a wonderful place to visit and live, no doubt about it. It has an attractive downtown with shops and restaurants, great schools, and the beauty of the Coast of Maine. We are 1-1/2 hours from Boston, 30 minutes from Portland and an hour from the White Mountains. People in the area are generally liberal and tolerant but do possess a fair amount of Yankee reserve. The town has a strong sense of place and pride in their community. Many members of the church are active in town affairs and serve on various community boards and organizations. Select this link to attain more information of this beautiful area.
