First Parish welcomes diversity. While the community, like Maine, is not statistically diverse, the congregation works towards understanding and acceptance among people of different races and persuasions. The church has sponsored speakers, workshops, and conversations about racial injustice, LGBTQ+ issues, poverty, and immigration. Many volunteer to donate food and help at local food kitchens.
We have an active caring team that keeps tabs on those in need within our community. A death in the family, a hospital stay, or some other medical problem will bring on letters and phone calls along with plenty of home cooked meals. Many in the congregation feel this is something we do well and have benefited from or contributed to our efforts to care for each other. First Parish completed a two-year educational program to help us become more open, affirming, and inclusive towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+, and Questioning people. In 2007 the congregation voted unanimously to become a Welcoming Congregation, and The Unitarian Universalist Association recognized this accomplishment.
Kennebunk is a wonderful place to visit and live, no doubt about it. It has an attractive downtown with shops and restaurants, great schools, and the beauty of the Coast of Maine. We are 1-1/2 hours from Boston, 30 minutes from Portland and an hour from the White Mountains. People in the area are generally liberal and tolerant but do possess a fair amount of Yankee reserve. The town has a strong sense of place and pride in their community. Many members of the church are active in town affairs and serve on various community boards and organizations.
